Somebody Goes Color
The first to suffer are gadgets which provide some limited possibilities or targeting some specific customer needs such as e-readers. Nobody would argue that e-readers are nice and have been a complete revolution in reading. Due to them customers can free their flats and houses from stacks of books which are sources of constant dust and allergies. Moreover, due to these sleek gadgets, especially branded ones like that of Nook and Kindle, reading has become popular once again, which is good for developed countries in general. But, nevertheless, now the devices are in a very hard situation as their popularity is significantly decreasing.
Barnes and Noble, the world-famous publisher and owner of the Nook e-reader has its own plan to come out of the crisis. Some time ago the company delivered a color Nook. Going color was not that unexpected. Due to that functionality readers can enjoy magazines and books for children. But at the same time the device got even more functionalities like an in-built web-browser and media player. What’s even more interesting, the company decided to undergo some rebranding of the product positioning it not as a color e-reader, which is also a significant feature but as an e-reading tablet.
It’s quite clear what the company wanted to achieve, as most future consumers will be lured by the magic word “tablet” due to the agitation at the market and in the Net. At the same time calling color Nook a tablet is kind of a great exaggeration which will undoubtedly lead to lots of disappointment and regrets.
Color Nook features a 7- inch screen with the Android OS installed. The first gadgets support Wi-Fi connection while later models are promised to provide a 3G connectivity. A really interesting feature which will undoubtedly arouse consumers’ interest is a read out loud feature for kid’s books. Most parents would agree it is a nice way to engage their children in some peaceful activity and have some rest. 8 gigabytes of internal memory which is roughly enough for 6, 000 books, 8 hours of constant battery work and a new design – all that makes up a pleasant addition to the Nook family.
Barnes and Noble is already taking orders and according to the company’s boasting remarks they are numerous. The shipments of the gadgets are to start just in several days providing the $249 device to all eager customers. But there are lots of issues yet uncovered whether the gadget having an Android OS installed will allow some other apps to run on it besides those defined by the producer. Taking into consideration it is really able to run apps as some games are already provided by the manufacturer itself, everything may happen and the device can turn out to be if not another iPad competitor than a significant player among other 7-inch tablets.
